- Green Mathew Sorrels enlisted for the Mexican War July 1, 1846 at Washington, Arkansas. He joined Captain Hunter's Company, Company G, of the Mounted Regiment of the Arkansas Infantry. The Regimental commander was Colonel Archibald Yell. Other officers of his company were 1st Lieutenant J. S. Dollarhide, 2nd Leutenants R.M. Cown and G.C. Steward. He brought a horse valued at $60 and horse equipment valued at $12.
From the regimental record "The Regiment took up the line of march on the 17th of July at Washington, Arkansas, the place of rendevous, and reached Camp Crockett near San Antonio de Bexar, Texas on August 28, 1846, a distance of 580 miles." On October 20, 1846 his horse strayed or was stolen. By October 25, 1846 he had remounted himself. This was the day after Cornelius Brown Tollett died. It was the same day that the regiment moved on to form their camp at Rio Grande. On February 9, 1847 he was absent and sick at Saltillo, Mexico. He was with his unit again on June 20, 1847 in Camargo, Mexico where he was mustered out [Records in the National Archives].
