      "THE OILIERS DID IT; THEY TOOK THE SECOND OF THE SERIES OF GAMES FROM GALVESTON;
      ....A little overanxiety to beat his former team mates caused big Pat Seay's downfall, and there is great rejoicing in this oil-soaked hamlet tonight.  Perry Wiess is rapidly acquiring a fame(?) arm through throwing bouquets (?) at himself.  His players, who couldn't be found after yesterday's game .... the Wiess crowd won by daring base-running and first rate pitching."

      MINING IN ALASKA
      PERRY WEISS (sic) HAS RETURNED TO BEAUMONT AND TELLS ABOUT IT.
      DIG GOLD WITH A DREDGE
      Returns Are Fifty Cents a Cubic Yard.
      Has Had Weather 72 Degrees Below Zero.
      SPECIAL TO THE NEWS.
      Beaumont, Tex., Sept 7. -- After six months' stay in Alaska Mr. Perry Wiess, a well known young man of this city, has returned to Beaumont, arriving last evening.
      Mr. Wiess will remain at home until next spring, when he will return to Alaska and resume gold mining operations.
      Mr. Wiess left here last March after he had formed a connection with the Bonanza Basin Gold Dredging Company, a mining corporation in which St. Louis and Texas parties are the chief stockholders.  The company is operating on the Canadian province of Yukon, the scene of the operations being about forty miles north of Dawson City.
      Mr. Wiess states that the method of mining is with a dredge, the basin of the Klondike River and its tributaries being dredged and the ore mined.  The company has had a successful year and is doing a large business.  The richest ore has already been pretty well mined and ore is now being used which returns only 50c per yard.  This is profitable, as there is plenty of ore mined in California which yields only 10c per yard.
      Mr. Wiess talks very interestingly of his travels and his experiences in Alaska.  He says that Dawson City now has a population of about 4,000 people, and the wild, floating character of the population has shifted and the city is now quiet and orderly.  He says that he did not suffer to any great extent from the cold, though one day the thermometer at Dawson got down to 72 degrees below zero and in other localities it was as low as 81 degrees below.  The furs worn up there are ample protection from the extreme cold.  He states that there is a scarcity of fuel and the largest item of expense by the gold mining company is on this score.  There is also a demand for skilled labor.  An engineer in Alaska gets $12 per day for his services, while ordinary unskilled labor is worth from 75c to $1 per hour.  The season for active work, however, is only about four months out of the year, which accounts for the high wages paid, and the high cost of living prevents laborers from going to Alaska.  The cost of living is very high.  An ordinary breakfast, consisting of a cup of coffee, a roll and some eggs, is worth $1.25, and it is impossible for a man to live any way at all for less that $100 to $125 a month.
      On the whole Mr. Wiess is well pleased with his trip and with conditions in Alaska.  He says that the means of travel are now comparatively comfortable, and that a man could make a flying trip to Dawson City if he desired within thirty days.  The route is by steamer from Seattle, Wash., to Skaguay, Alaska.  From Skaguay a railroad 110 miles long takes the traveler over the Rocky Mountains into the province of Yukon and thence a sleigh line runs to Dawson City, a distance of 590 miles.  When Mr. Wiess went over it took him twelve days to make the trip in the sleigh.
