- Proofs that Abigail Crane was the daughter of Stephen Bradford Crane and Rhoda Holloway.
1 - Elizabeth Caroline (Bumstead) Ebner, granddaughter of Abigail (Crane) Martin, authored the genealogy we have which traces our family through Abigail to Gov. Robert Treat.
Arthur Irving Bumstead wrote to his second cousin Jessie Wiess Whittington in 1931:
"The following is a copy of a record of the Bumstead Family written Dec. 27, 1906 by Arthur Irving Bumstead from information given him, chiefly by Ida G. Hatch from records in her possession together with some additions. A large portion of said information was given said Ida G. Hatch by Elizabeth Caroline Bumstead Ebner from records made by her."
Ida Hatch was the daughter of Matilda Bumstead Hatch. She was Elizabeth Bumstead Ebner's niece and the great granddaugher of Abigail Crane Martin.
There was some question about the accuracy of this genealogy as other researchers had found no evidence of a daughter named Abigail in their family.
2 - DNA testing now provides further clues for family lines. In our case, another genealogical DNA researcher, Brian Holden, who has proof of his descendancy from Gov. Robert Treat and Jane Cravey through their daughter Mary Treat who married Azariah Crane through their son Azariah Crane who married Rebecca Prince -- the same line as ours. Brian's line splits off from ours at Moses Crane, the son of Azariah and Rebecca (Prince) Crane and a brother to our Stephen Bradford Crane who married Rhoda Holloway.
This researcher's autosomal DNA test and that of Brian Holden share a common segment of DNA which indicates a relationship and there is no other known possible family tie other than the family of Azariah Crane and Rebecca Prince.
Conclusion: The genealogy created by Elizabeth Caroline Bumstead Ebner should be taken as factual as (a) she was the granddaughter of Abigail Crane and (b) it has been proven to be accurate through direct sources and it is confirmed by the work of other researchers. The question about the accuracy of the genealogy alleging that Abigail Crane is the daughter of Stephen Crane and Rhoda Holloway (Elizabeth's great grandparents) is supported by the autosomal DNA match of their descendants Tom Cloud and Brian Holden who appear to have no other genealogical ties that could explain the DNA match.
