2 Bay Pilots on Plane Down in Blizzard
Two Bay Area pilots are missing in a Capital Airways cargo plane which disappeared and is presumed crashed between Denver, Colo., and Larimie, Wyo., in a blizzard.
Civil Aeronautics Administration officials in Denver identified the captain of the plane as Frank L. Courtell of 24951 Townsend Ave., Hayward, and the co-pilot as Calvin Cloud of 3662 Jefferson St., Napa.
The C-46 transport plane, loaded with high priority military freight, left Denver's Stapleton Airfield early yesterday for Hill Air Force Base at Ogden, Utah.
Courtell radioed at 6:11 a.m. (MST) that one of the plane's two engines had failed.  He said the wings were icing at 10,500 feet and that he would turn back to Denver.  He was over north Colorado near Fort Collins at the time.

Plane Wreck Sighted West Of Horsetooth
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) -- Airplane wreckage was sighted this afternoon by two Air Force fliers searching for a missing C46 cargo plane with two men aboard.
The plane vanished in a blizzard Sunday shortly after leaving Denver for Hill Air Force Base, Utah.
The wing tips and tail section of a plane were spotted in the rugged Cache la Poudre River country 15 miles west of Horsetooth Reservoir, southwest of here.
The wreckage was sighted by Capt. Charles S. Cramer and Lt. Alfred Sjokvil(?) of Lowry Air Force Base, Denver.  They said they could detect no sign of life.
A helicopter was sent to the scene in an effort to get a closer look.  Meanwhile ground parties started into the area.
The helicopter pilot reported later the plane was definitely the missing C-46.  He said it had burned and he could see no tracks in deep snow leading away from the wreckage.
The pilot said the crash scene is on the northwest portion of White Pines Ridge.
A dozen planes from Fort Collins joined the search.  Farther north, at Laramie, Wyo., Civil Air Patrol officials decided against sending up their small craft because of gusty winds, which occasionally reached velocities of 50 miles per hour.
Earlier in the day, ground crews trudged through deep snow toward a point 25 miles west of Fort Collins where four fires were reported seen by a student Air Force pilot.  He said the fires were shaped like a letter "L".
No word has been received from the ground parties by noon.
