The story is that he was talking on the telephone to another woman and Ruth came in with the rifle. The woman on the phone with Uncle Herbert said she heard Ruth say "I bet I can get you off that damn telephone", and then the sound of the shot rang out. Uncle Herbert was dead within minutes... There was a trial, and I've been told, Ruth was released claiming "self defense".
