George Washington Cloud was a great-grandfather on Harvey's maternal side. George's mother, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Isom Cloud.
George Cloud was born November 24, 1840, at or near Noblesville (Hamilton County), Indiana, to Elizabeth Cloud. By 1850, his mother had married Elisha Booth, and he was living with stepbrothers, Isaac, Franklin and Henry Booth and half-sister, Caroline Booth in Noblesville, and next door to his uncle and aunt, James and Loucinda Cloud and their three children, his cousins. I have no information on George Washington Cloud between 1850 and 1865, but on March 21, 1865,he enlisted in the Union Army at Wabash, Indiana, joining Company H of the 155th Regiment of Indiana Infantry and from which ha was honorably discharged at Dover, Delaware, on August 4, 1865, according to his enlistment, George had grey eyes, dark hair, a fair complexion, stood 5' 7 and was a farmer. He returned to Noblesville, then moved to Jasper County, Indiana.
George was married to Rachel A. Coppess at Rensealear (Jasper County), Indiana on April 3 1867. They lived in Jasper County about a year after their marriage, then moved to Pulaski County, Indiana, where they lived for a year. In about 1871, they moved to Linn County, Iowa for about one year; then to Jones County, Iowa for about two years; then Cedar County, Iowa for three years; finally settling in Webster County (Fort Dodge), Iowa, where they lived the remainder of their lives.
George and Rachel's marriage produced six children, who were living in 1900. They were Elsie (in. Hurley) born January 4, 1868 in Pulaski County, Indiana; Edwin Cloud born 1870; George Harvey Cloud (my grandfather), who was born in Cedar County, Iowa; Carrie (m. Prime) born in June 1880 in Fort Dodge; and Anna (m. Knowles) born in April 1883 in Fort Dodge. A boy who died at or soon after birth was born on July 22, 1878.
In a Civil War pension application filed in May, 1891, George is described as 5'7", 155 pound. and 49 years of age, although he was actually 51. He complained of rheumatism and that it was "worse when I work". He also complained that his "heart stops and jumps occasionally and is painful". The examining physician agreed that he had rheumatism, liver problems and incipient tuberculoses.
On federal censuses, George variously described his occupation as "teamster" and "laborer".
George Washington Cloud died on June 10, 1917, at Fort Dodge, Iowa.
His wife Rachel died there July 16, 1931.
