    Notes
    • He was named for his Uncle Tom.  His brother J.W. remembered "Jerry" coming to visit from Oklahoma City, when he was 7 or 8 years old, driving a 1931 or 1932 4-door convertible and taking him for a ride.  He said they were impressed that Jerry always wore a suit and a tie when he came to visit.
He ran away from home when he was about 15 -- supposedly because he got a whipping for swimming in the Canadian River outside Konawa. His dad thought it was too dangerous.  He went to Oklahoma City to live with his sister, Hazel, and finished high school there.  He worked for Mrs. Vaughn at her grocery store.. May 12, 2000 Hazel said, for his first job, he got a job playing his guitar in a dance hall for five dollars a night.  She said he always loved his guitar.  He drove a cab there and worked as an accountant. He later lived with a lady named Mrs. Yoakum (Yoacum?) who owned a grocery store (the Star Food Market) and a used car lot. He delivered groceries for her on his bicycle.  Mrs. Yoakum also had a daughter. (Gloria later said their names were Loma Putnam and son Ted -- or perhaps Ted married Loma Putnam.)
On July 17, 1940, he enlisted in the First Cavalry Division, U.S. Army, to serve in WW-II.  He went to Port Arthur to study Radio at Port Arthur College so he could be a radio operator.  That's where he met Gloria Whittington.  He was transferred to El Paso and she took the train there to marry him.  He was shipped to the Pacific and served in the Philippines for two years.  During that time, his eldest son was born.  He served as an electrician and then as the driver, radio operator and valet for several officers, including General I.P. (Innes) Swift.
When he returned, he took a job as an accountant in Dallas and had a terrible asthma attack and, in August, 1946, moved back to Oklahoma City for relief from it.  He sought out Mrs. Yoakum, rented an apartment from her, and he and her son, Ted Yoakum, drove cabs. She also owned a used car lot and Tom sold the Pontiac his wife Gloria loved and bought a Nash Rambler from her to use as a cab.  He took a position as engineer of a radio station in Tucumcari, New Mexico and then at Jefferson Chemical Company in Port Arthur and retired from there.  (Mrs. Yoakum died 1939, so she could not be the person Gloria remembers, perhaps Mrs. Vaughn.)
He loved the guitar, his children remembering him getting up early every morning to study music and to play the guitar.  He later taught guitar in his home for over ten years.  He loved to play music, cards and golf with his friends.
His Army Separation Record notes that he was a Tec4, and entered active service July 17, 1940.  His permanent address was given as 3725 34th Street, Port Arthur, Texas (his in-laws).  Highest grade completed, 12th, at Central High School, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, graduating in 1934.  His Service Education was "Signal Corps; Radio Operator" and "USAFI; Radio, Elect.Tg."  He had previously worked four years at the Star Food Market in Oklahoma City.  His Military Specialty is listed as "4 years, Tec4, Radio Opr High Speed, code 777".  His date of separation was July 11, 1945 at Fort Bliss, signed by Capt. Claude C. Dove.
His Honorable Discharge Certificate gives his height as 5' 6" and his weight as 127 lbs.  His Military History as: Date of entry into active service: July 17, 1940 at Fort Logan, Colo.  Home address at time of entry: "Fen Del Pushmataha Okla" (this is probably "Gen. Del.").  Military occupational specialty listed as Radio Operator High Speed 777.  Military qualifications: "Sharpshooter (Machine Gun) Dec 3, 1942".  Battles and Campaigns: "New Guinea, Bismarck-Archipelago, Southern Philippine and Luzon Campaigns".  Decorations and Citations: "Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon (2 Bronze Stars), Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon (4 Bronze Stars)".

    • Dardenelle and Aunt Hazel (August and September, 1997) said that grandpa Bill was a cotton gin man, that Jake worked in the gin for him and that grandpa Bill had hired servants.  Jake met Lizzie while she was working in his house.
Aunt Hazel said (11-4-1997) that "dad said Center was no place to raise kids and moved six miles to River Bend just across the river from Ada".  They lived there for a few years, dad working with machinery in a cotton gin, and then moved on to Konawa, about 1909, because dad wanted a country life with his family.

There was a two year drought in Konawa and they lost everything but one cow.  Jake got an opportunity to share crop in Albion so they moved there.  Hazel and Gail Boynton bought them a place there (Gail went to a "tax title" land auction and bid on the 40 acres for 25 cents an acre and got it for $7.50.)  Jake built a log house that they lived in.
Hazel wrote that the entries in the family Bible were made by Shorty, as momma couldn't write very well.  "Shorty wrote the record and were mostly of our family, for she's like me, knew little of family traditions."  Just before she died, Shorty gave the family Bible to George Napier's wife, Glenda.
Dardenelle said he'd heard that grandma Cloud's grandfather Seybold served in the civil war (i.e. David Seybold).
