- From 1900-1908 he was in McGregor Schools. 1908-1909, he went to Mitchell County with 'uncle' Dick Grice. Then he did farm work of various kinds, and picked cotton. September 8, 1910, he enlisted in the Navy at 'Goat Island', Yerba Buena, San Francisco Bay Area.
In October he sailed for the Philippines via Hawaii and Guam. He was on the ship Sheridan for 29 days. Then on Monitor Monterey to China. Then Pagoda and Anchorage to Shanghai. There he transferred to a river gunboat Helena and sailed up and down the Yangtze River. He went to Woohoo, Nanking, and visited Ming Tombs where all the Ming Dynasty kings have been buried since 800A.D. He traveled to Hankow, Poochow, Hanyang to Ichang, which is 1,000 miles up the river, and at the foot of the mountains. He was where the famous Ichang Gorge breaks through from Tibet. The Chinese Revolution was in full swing (1910-1912). In November of 1914 he came home via Yokohama.
From 1914-1917 he followed the harvest north to Canada and west to Montana. He railroaded on the Great Northern and handled real estate at Whitefish, Montana. He mined at Butte and worked in smelters in Anaconda. On January 17, 1917, he married Esther Price (b. July 17, 1891) at Florescent, Colorado.
