"30 Years Ago - from the files of the Carthage Republican" Sept. 21, 1898
While at St. Marys we had an interview with our venerable and esteemed friend, Albert Cloud, now nearly 83 years of age. The lives of such men are a valuable lesson to young people.
He was born in Indiana, Dec. 4, 1815, moved to Kentucky with his parents when twelve years of age and came to Illinois in 1838 and settled on the farm where he resided up to a year ago.
He married a daughter of the Reverend Joseph Botts, a well-known pioneer minister, the same year he came to the state. His first wife died in 1851 without issue and in 1852, he married Mrs. Nancy G. Huey, widow of Samuel Huey, by whom he had seven children, but two of whom are living -- William Cloud, a prominent farmer and stock raiser of Gage Co., Nebraska and James who lives here on the old homestead.
Although a man of unassuming disposition, he has filled every office of importance in the township. He was for many years justice of the peace, and he has held the offices of supervisor and assessor, and a few years ago when the township school fund was in a complicated condition, the people turned to him with a common impulse to accept the office of school trustee and assist in preserving the school fund. And right well did he perform the service, not a dollar being lost to the school fund.
In politics he has always been a democrat. In religion a Universalist. He was never party to a law suit and never had a wrangle or fight in his life.
He was always very fond of fishing, and is temperate in his eating and drinking. A more truthful and honest man never lived.
