- For a long time, in some genealogies, this Francis Gaines, son of Richard Gaines of Culpeper, was confused with the lineage of Francis Gaines of King and Queen County.
This Francis was the son and administrator of the estate of his father, Richard Gaines of Culpeper County, Virginia. His wife was Dorthy (Dorothy), maiden name unknown. Both of their wills were probated in Culpeper County, Virginia. His will dated 9/26/1775, St. Markes Parish, proved 7/15/1776. The Will of his wife, Dorthy, was dated 4/24/1786, proved 6/19/1786. The will of Francis Gaines, wife Dorthy, St. Marks Parish, Culpeper County, Virginia, dated September 17, 1776, stated: "I give Isabella Gaines, daughter of my nephew, Henry Gaines, the sum of 32 pounds to be paid out of the amount due from her father to me." This "nephew Henry Gaines" was the son of William and Isabella Pendleton Gaines. Further proof that his Francis was the brother of William Gaines and son of Richard Gaines of Culpeper County.
