    Notes:

The pioneer Cloud of Cloud's Ferry came from Virginia to Cloud's Ferry on Clinch River, which is five miles east of Howard's Quarter, at a very early day.  He married Jane Carpenter.  Info from P.G. Fulkerson Papers: 23 Jul 1980.
Imogene Bennett wrote: "All those brothers (Calvin, Greenberry, William Henry) who came to Taney, Stone, Christian Co MO, as well as their sister, Malinda who married James MITCHELL, were the ones who belonged to Joseph CLOUD & Jane CARPENTER. Their sister, Elizabeth who married John DEVAULT, remained in Claiborne Co. One sister, Mary (Polly), who married Joel or Joseph MILLS (records vary as to his given name), died in Hancock Co TN and her husband remarried. Some of the children of the MILLS marriage got to Taney, Stone, & Christian Co MO. And some kids of another brother (Burrell) also got to the area. There are tons of descendants of all those people in southwest."
It is not known if our Joseph Cloud is the same as the one who joined the Big Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Claiborne Co TN.  Included in the minutes of that church the 4th Saturday in August 1802, "Church met at War Creek and after worship proceeded to business.  1st Opened a door for new members and received by experience Joseph Cloud."  There were several other members received that same day which included Hardy Mills.
Joseph Cloud may have served in the War of 1812 in Bunch's Regiment.  There was one by the name listed in that regiment which may have been our Joseph.  This regiment consisted of men recruited partly from Claiborne Co TN and other names  included were Yelverton, James, and Fielding Carpenter, believed to be brothers of Jane Carpenter.
11 Nov [tab] 1822 -- Joseph Cloud was appointed overseer of the road leading from Michael Pearson's Still House to the "said Cloud's ferry" on Clinch River.
1823 -- Joseph Cloud died between August 11 and November 11, 1823, leaving Jane a widow with eight children, the youngest only 2 years old.
11 Aug 1823 -- Joseph Cloud made his will in Claiborne County 11 Aug 1823.  Nearly 20 years later, Jane was selling land on the north side of the Clinch River.  In the deed, she said she held the land ?by virtue of the will of her said husband, Joseph Cloud, dec'd, dated the 11th day of August 1823.?
11 Nov 1823 -- Joseph Cloud was deceased by 11 Nov 1823 when the Claiborne County Court ordered Henry Grabner to be appointed in the place of Joseph Cloud, deceased.  Mr. Grabner was ordered to have the same work hands as Joseph Cloud had when he was first appointed the previous year.
22 Jun [tab] 1824 -- Further evidence that Joseph Cloud made a will is contained in court minutes of Claiborne Co TN.  Yelverton Carpenter and Benjamin Cloud came into Open Court 22 Jun 1824 and made oaths they were two subscribing witnesses who saw Joseph Cloud sign, seal, and declare it to be his last will and testament.  They said he was of sound and disposing memory at the time he executed his will.  It is believed Benjamin Cloud was a brother of Joseph and Yelverton Carpenter was a brother of Jane.  It was common practice for a member of each side of the family to witness wills.

    Military:
May have served in Brnch's Regiment during the War of 1812.  Joseph Cloud was one of the names listed of men recruited from Claiborne County, TN. along with Yelverton, James, and Fielding Carpenter, believed to be brother of Jane Carpenter his wife.

    Will:
Further evidence that Joseph Cloud made a will is contained in court minutes of Claiborne Co., TN (Nov 1821-Dec 1824, p 354.). Yelverton Carpenter and Benjamin Cloud came in Open Court 22 Jun 1824 and made oaths they were two subscribing witnesses who saw Joseph Cloud sign, seal and declare it to be his last will and testament.  They said he was of sound and disposing memory at the time he executed his will.  It is believed Benjamin Cloud was a brother of Joseph and Yelverton Carpenter was a brother of Jane.  It was common practice for a member of each side of the family to witness wills.

    Died:
From court minutes, we have now pinpointed that Joseph CLOUD died sometime between 11 Aug & 11 Nov 1823 and that is was, in fact, he who owned Cloud's Ferry.  From the Early Settlers clips, it said, "The Pioneer CLOUD of Cloud's Ferry came from Va to Cloud's Ferry on Clinch River, which is five miles east of Howard's Quarter, at a very early date..." Joseph's death left Jane a widow with eight children, the youngest only 2 years old.

Joseph married Jane "Jenny" Carpenter circa 1804, Claiborne county, Tennessee, USA. Jane (daughter of Stephen Carpenter and Rebecca Collins) was born circa 1786, Wilkes county, North Carolina, USA; died Aft Apr 17, 1850, Claiborne county, Tennessee, USA. [Group Sheet]

  6. 13.  Jane "Jenny" Carpenter was born circa 1786, Wilkes county, North Carolina, USA (daughter of Stephen Carpenter and Rebecca Collins); died Aft Apr 17, 1850, Claiborne county, Tennessee, USA.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 1830, Claiborne county, Tennessee, USA
    • Census: 1840, Claiborne county, Tennessee, USA

    Notes:

Found in the 1830 Claiborne County, Tennessee census.  1842 Deed Book R, P 30 Claiborne County, Tennessee.
1830 Jane Cloud was enumerated in Claiborne Co TN in 1830.  It appears the children still at home with her then were sons William Henry, Greenberry, Benjamin, and Calvin.  It is my belief son Burrell had been married, perhaps his wife had died, and he returned home to live with his mother for help with a young son, James Madison.  It appears Burrell and James Madison were also enumerated in the home in 1830.  Proof is still needed that James Madison was, in fact, a son of Burrell.
1840 Jane Cloud was enumerated in Claiborne Co TN in 1840.  It is my belief her grandson, James Madison Cloud, was still living with her.  By that time Burrell had married Mary McCollough and wasn't enumerated with Jane.  Living with Jane were son William Henry, his wife (Mary Jane Lakins), and their children.
11 Jul 1842 Jane Cloud made a bill of sale for a Negro boy named Bill to her son, Benjamin Cloud.  Consideration was one dollar.
11 Jul 1842 Jane Cloud made a bill of sale to her son-in-law, John Devault, all of her interest in a certain Negro named Sylvia and all her increase.  This was given in consideration for his giving her support and maintenance during her widowhood.
11 Jul 1842 Jane Cloud sold to Pharoah Rowe for $110 a tract of land containing 100 acres lying on the north side of the Clinch River just below the mouth of the first small branch below Cloud's Ferry.  I have been unable to pinpoint the exact location where Cloud's Ferry was located.
11 Jul 1842 Jane Cloud made a bill of sale to her son-in-law, John Devault, for a Negro Sylvia and her children, Susan, Sam, Anderson, and Caroline.  Sylvia and Caroline were already in the hands of John Devault; Sam was in the hands of John Barnard; Anderson was in the hands of John Pearson; and Susan was in the possession of Jane's son-in-law, Joseph Mills.
Jul 1845 Jane Cloud was received by experience into the War Creek Baptist Church.  That church was located on War Creek in Hancock Co TN very near Luther TN.  This would seem to indicate Jane moved from Claiborne Co TN.  Perhaps Jane and possible grandson went to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary (Polly) and Joseph Mills, who were living in Hancock Co TN at that time.  In the 1850 census of Hancock Co TN, James Madison Cloud was living with Mary & Joseph Mills' daughter and her husband, Mariah (Mills) and Thomas Winkler.
