  1. 8.  Dr. William \ Wilhelm Charles Seybold, II was born 1795, Silesia (Schlesien), Prussia (son of Dr. Charles Siebold \ Seybold); died Apr 1864, Newton county, Texas, USA.

    Other Events:

    • Census: Jul 09, 1860, Newton, Newton county, Texas, USA

    Notes:

Family tradition holds that Dr. Seybold was a very successful physician in Germany, owning two hospitals -- one in Berlin.  He was held in high esteem by many, including the ruling monarch.  (This appears to be around the time of the transition of power in the region.  The Holy Roman Emperor Francis II, who was also Emperor Francis I of Austria, died in March 1835 and his son Ferdinand I of Austria succeeded as Emperor of Austria.)  But, when his hospitals were taken over by the monarch, he fled to the United States -- leaving a substantial fortune behind.  He is said to have obtained entry through the Port of New York, moving to Kentucky and then to Burkeville in East Texas by August of 1835.  No record of their names has been found in passenger lists so it is thought they may have traveled under assumed names for their safety.
He brought his medical book, written in German, and thought to have included his diary as well as formulae for the prescriptions he had invented.  For a few years in the mid-1900s, this book was in the possession of his great-granddaughter, Blanche O'Brien, but was then passed on to her sister in San Antonio, Irma Treas, who was working on a family history.  Perhaps the book was passed on to her daughter Jean Treas Montgomery and may now be in the possession of one of Jean's sons, David or Craig Montgomery.
As a resident of Texas prior to its Independence -- coming to Texas in 1835 -- he was declared a Citizen of the First Class and, in February of 1838, was granted one league (4428 acres) in the present county of Newton and one labor (177 acres) in present Jasper county. These land grants, dated May 30, 1838 bear the certificate number 308, patents numbers 109 and 110 issued February 22, 1842.
In 1848, a group of Galveston doctors, including Dr. William Seybold, petitioned the Texas legislature to grant a charter for the Medical and Surgical Society of Galveston.  The legislature changed the name and the scope to "Medical and Surgical Society of the State of Texas".
"Sect. 1st.  Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Texas, that John B. Taylor
[followed by 36 names] ... Wm. Seybold, ... [12 more names, totaling 50], their associates and successors be and they are hereby constituted a body politic under the name and style of the "Medical and Surgical Society of the State of Texas"."
This resolution did not pass and 5 years later, in 1853, a similar resolution was introduced in Austin, Travis County, Texas and was passed, thus establishing the Texas Medical Association.  Dr. Seybold was not a signator on that legislation.

William married Louisa Wilhelmina (__). Louisa was born 1804, Saxony (Sachsen), Germany; died 1868, Newton county, Texas, USA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Louisa Wilhelmina (__) was born 1804, Saxony (Sachsen), Germany; died 1868, Newton county, Texas, USA.

    Other Events:

    • Census: Jul 09, 1860, Newton, Newton county, Texas, USA

    Notes:

Confederate tax receipt no. 170, dated JAN 1, 1864, for $22.50 cents, received of Tr(?) Wilhelmine Seybold.

    Notes:

It is believed they lived about five miles SSE of Burkeville, now near Stringtown on FM 1414.  Jasper county tax records show that he paid taxes as early as 1838 (present day Newton and Jasper counties were all part of Jasper county during the Republic of Texas) and prior to 1848, Wilhelmina is recorded buying hundreds of acres of land in Newton county in both of their names.
The following excerpts from the Commissioners Court Minutes from August 1846 to February 1851 attest to the life and service of the Seybolds in that county.
"Road Precinct No. 3.  Road from Fields Mills to county line near Jm. Carmans to be reviewed and attured.  William Chaddick overseer. List of hands .... Conrod Seybold, Dr. Seybold negroes ....
"Precinct No. 5.  The Road from Fields Mills the nearest and best way to the Jasper County line, near John Carmans, Silas Chapman ... overseer, with the following hands ... Conrad Seybold, Dr. Seybold's negroes ...
Doctor Seybold died in 1864.  His wife, Wilhelmina, died 4 years later, 1868, and his only surviving child, Conrad, died 4 years after that in 1872 at the age of 42.
