    Notes
    • "Uncle Ben's" house was built of logs in the early settler style with two large rooms on the front and a "dog-trot" between them.  There was an el shaped extension behind the left front room as one faced the house.  The house was located in a hollow between the houses of Joseph and James in Jeffrey's Cove.  All three Cloud houses were located on the same side of the road, facing toward the mountain.  The households of all three Cloud brothers used water from Cloud spring.  They also kept their milk, butter, and other perishable foods in the mouth of the spring.
Uncle Ben was a quiet person.  He didn't waste many words when he talked.  This researcher remembers Aunt Myrtle with great fondness.  She and Grandmother "Ellen" Cloud could cover more neighborhood 'gossip' or news in an hour than most women could cover in a week.
Two of Benjamin Sr.'s daughters, Ruth and Nannie, and his son, Benjamin Jr., were like brother and sisters to Joe Cloud's children next door.  There was a special bond among Ruth, Nannie, Ben Jr. and Joe's daughter, Katherine "Katy" Cloud.  They socialized together and double-dated on outings such as spending a Sunday afternoon at Russell's cave.  The girls also had a friendly competition for boyfriends from the community.  The son of Katy recalls a time when he and Katy visited Nannie in her daughter's home.  They spent the night and Katy's son could not believe his ears when he overheard these two women, who were both widowed and in their eighties, lying in bed and giggling like school girls while they argued over which one was the favorite of certain neighborhood boys during their teen years.
