    Notes
    • Leslie attended public school in Denver, Colorado and graduated from East High School there in 1973.  She received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Colorado in 1984.
Leslie, Chas, Zoe and Dana were on the American Airlines plane that was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon - Flight #77, originating at Dulles Airport in the terrorist attack on America.  They were verified on the passenger list.  Also, on rootsweb.com, Roots Listers (Whittington mailing list) reported her death, and one Lister who gave her name as Sandy Whittington, from Douglasville, GA, transcribed this from the Atlanta Constitution on September 13, 2001.  It was accompanied by photographs of Leslie and her family, but the archives didn't include the photos.
"Metro Atlantans hunger for news of family, friends:
      By Dana Tofig dtogig@-at-ajc.com>
Sara Guest of Athens was called at work by her mother Tuesday.  Guest's sister Leslie was on a flight from Washington to Los Angeles that crashed.  She went to her mother's house, also in Athens, and waited for a phone call.  But she already knew that her sister was gone.
I don't know what we were waiting for, she said.
Confirmation came in the form of a phone call from American Airlines on Wednesday morning.  Leslie Whittington, 45, her husband Charles Falkenberg, 45, and their two daughters, Zoe, 8, and Dana, 2 were killed when American Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon.
We really knew, Guest said.  It just took awhile to finally accept.
The couple had waited until later in life to have children but were enjoying every minute of parenthood.  They were both high achievers, Guest said.  They didn't have them until a lot later than most people, but they really enjoyed them.
Whittington, who used to live in Georgia, and her family were embarking on a journey when their flight crashed.  A professor of public policy at Georgetown University in Washington, Whittington was going to spend the next two months as a visiting fellow at Australian National University in Canberra.  If the flight had reached L.A., they would have caught a connection to Australia.
But now the family must wait for investigators to sift through the Pentagon rubble and must make plans for a memorial service.  Guest has avoided television and the repeated images of planes crashing into the World Trade Center.  She's glad there is no video of the crash that killed her sister and her family."
      Thursday, September 13, 2001, I received this e-mail from Leslie's step-father, George Koch.
"A memorial service for Leslie Whittington; her husband, Charles Falkenberg; and their daughters, Zoe Falkenberg and Dana Falkenberg will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 23, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring, Maryland, 10309 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland 20903 (301-434-4050).  Directions are at the church's website, http://www.uucss.org .  Memorial contributions to the Scholarship Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Mid-Atlantic Community may be sent to the "UUMAC Scholarship Fund" at the above address.
Another memorial service by the faculty of Georgetown University, where Leslie Whittington was an Associate Professor and Associate Dean, will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, September 17 at Trinity Church, 36th and N Street, NW, in Washington."
