      J. Clifford Smith Of Mt. Zion Dies
      J. Clifford Smith, 73, a resident of Mt. Zion, died at 5:15 p.m.Saturday at Clinic Hospital, where he had been admitted April 24.
      A son of David H. and Emma Jones Smith, he was born Jan. 28, 1897 in Greentown. His marriage to Arzona F. Cloud, who survives, took place June 30, 1923.
      A retired truck driver, he was a member of the United Brethren Church in Mt. Zion. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the Bluffton American Legion Post.
      Surviving, in addition to the wife, are a son, Lawrence E. (Gene)Smith of Hartford City, a sister, Mrs. Irene Calkins of Whitewater, Wis., and two grandchildren.
      Friends may call at the H. Brown & Sons Funeral Home in Warren, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Officiating will be Rev. J.Clair Peters and Rev. John F. Wagner. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Warren.

      Jacob Clifford Smith-Arzona Fay Cloud
      Clifford Smith, as he was known, was born in Greentown, Indiana, January 18, 1897. His father, David Harrison Smith, was born in Pennsylvania. Later, he became a glassworker and moved the family to different areas to work. Clifford's mother, Emma Jones, was the youngest daughter of Robert F. and Lavina Tripp Jones. The Jones family located in Chester Township from Jackson County, Ohio, in 1853.
      When Clifford was in his early twenties, he came from Wisconsin to help his uncle William "Lon" Jones farm in Section Five, Chester Township. He attended the Mt. Zion United Brethren Church in Christ where he met Arzona Cloud.
      Arzona Fay, born February 28, 1902, was the daughter of Henry S. and Martha Lowry Cloud of Mt. Zion. The Lowry and Cloud families were early farming residents of Jackson and Chester Townships. Part of Mt. Zion was the farm of Henry Cloud.
      Clifford and Arzona were married June 30, 1923, in Mt. Zion. They were the parents of three children. Lawrence Eugene was born June 10, 1924,at the William Jones farm in Chester Township. Mary Louise born April 23, 1928, died April 24, 1928. Robert Marlin, born September 9, 1937, died March 21, 1938.
      They lived in and around Mt. Zion all their married lives. He retired in 1963 as a semi-truck driver and Arzona was a homemaker. They were both members of the Mt. Zion United Brethren in Christ. Clifford served in World War I and was a farmer member of the Bluffton American Legion Post III.
      Clifford passed away May 2, 1972, and Arzona passed away June 28, 1987. Both are buried in the Woodlawn cemetery in Warren, Indiana.
      Lawrence Eugene graduated from Chester Center High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. On November 6, 1954, he was married to Phyllis L. Hackenjos of French Township, Adams County, Indiana.
      They are the parents of two children: Lester Ray and Rhonda Sue. Lester, born November 29, 1958, married Rhonda Kay Bennett of Hartford City, Indiana. They have two children, Daniel Benjamin was born January 12, 1988, and Jennifer Faith was born March 22, 1990. The family lives near Marion, Indian. Rhonda Sue married Jerry Paul Orem of Richmond, Indiana, and they live in Indianapolis.
      Lawrence and Phyllis live near Hartford City. He retired from Warner Gear, Muncie, Indiana, on March 31, 1990, after working there for forty-two years and ten months.
