    Notes
    • Jennie (Cloud) Wimmer was perhaps the most instrumental person in starting the California gold rush at Sutter's Mill.  She and her brothers had panned for gold in Georgia and knew what it looked like.  The nugget her husband Peter Wimmer and James Marshall found was thought to be pyrite (fools gold) or mica, but she knew it was gold and tested and verified it in a pot of lye soap.  The rest is history.
Peter Wimmer and Jane were mentioned in the "North Georgia History" in  stories about "The Georgians who left for the California Goldrush" which refers to The Trailblazers", a quarterly bulletin of California pioneers of Santa Clara County, 1980, that had an article on Elizabeth Jane Wimmer [1822-1885] entitled "She knew Gold When She Saw It."
The article relates "Elizabeth Jane [or Jennie] CLOUD BIAZ had originally resided in Lumpkin County, Georgia, where her father, MARTIN CLOUD, her brother James, and her husband Obadiah worked gold claims.  Jennie and her mother, Polly Cloud, operated a miner's boarding house and provided meals for the men.  Jennie picked up her knowledge of gold and mining during this time."
Elizabeth Jane Cloud married Obadiah Biaz at the age of 16, eventually moving from Lumpkin County to lexington, Missouri where they purchased land.  Their neighbors in Lexington were Peter and Polly Harlan] Wimmer.  Obadiah Biaz and Polly [Harlan] Wimmer ultimately died of malaria fever, leaving Peter with five children and Jennie with two.  A year later, Peter and Jennie were married.  Per her affidavit, she was the wife of Peter L. Wimmer and they traveled to Coloma on the American River, California, in the year 1847, traveling there to build a saw mill for Gen. John A. Sutter.
