Based on the research of Willie H. Boyd, Eliza C. Boyd was born in South Carolina approximately in 1816. Her father was from South Carolina and mother from Maryland. She married Samuel Boyd (under plantation law) in1840, and again in 1865 in an official church wedding. She is said to have been half Indian and half black but had the complexion of a mulatto. Eliza was seduced by plantation owner James C. Boyd and Hilliard Boyd was born in 1844. She worked as a house servant for James C. Boyd from 1830 to 1865. After the Civil War, she worked as a housemaid for William Boyd. In 1886, she purchased 5 acres of land with an overseer house from Fannie Cottingham Boyd (William Boyd's wife) for $85.00. In 1900, Eliza was one of a few head of household who actually owned her home. All others were renters (sharecroppers). Eliza was the mother of 16 children of which 8 were living in 1900. The 1920 Census shows Eliza, age 102, living with a daughter-in-law in La Place, Alabama. Eliza never learned to read or write.
