          His application for bounty land for service in the War of 1812; State of Louisiana, County of Opelousas; Parish of St. Landry:
          "On this fourteenth day of November ... 1855 personally appeared ... John Whittington aged fifty six years, a resident of Parish of St. Landry in the State of Louisiana .... who was a private in the Company commanded by Captain Peter Burnett in the Battalion of Infantry of Mississippi Militia commanded by Major Ross in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States the 18th June 1812, that he was a Substitute in place of (...? looks like Jonas Humble ?...) at Liberty courthouse, Amite County Mississippi on or about the 25th of September A.D. 1814 for the term of six months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of six months, less 3 days and was honorably discharged at Mobile Alabama on the 22nd day of March A.D. 1815 on account of the Peace, as will appear by the muster rolls of said Company he received a discharge which he forwarded to the Department when he made his application under the act of 28 Sept 1850."
          "He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the "act granting additional bounty land to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States", approved March 8, 1855. ...."  witnessed by Benjamin R. Garrett and Benjamin F. Linton.
          December 1st 1874, a signed application for pension from the War of 1812 is signed by John and Elisha Whittington.  "...John Whittington, aged 75 years, a resident of Bayou Cocodrile, county of St. Landry, state of Louisiana ... that his wife's name was Sarah Nelson, to whom he was married at Amite County Miss on the 21st day of September, 1817; that he served the full period of sixty days in the military service of the United States in the war of 1812; that he is the identical John Whittington who (..?..) enlisted in Captain Peter Barnett company, (..?..) regiment, Ropes Battallion at Amit Liberty Mississippi, on the 25th day of September 1814, and was honorably discharged at Mobile Alabama on the 22nd day of March, 1815; .... (statement of service ... copy unreadable) ...."
          Mabel Alice Thompson, in her book "Looking Back, A Narrative History of Bayou Chicot", wrote about John Whittington:    "... Mercy Ann, a minor when John made a petition in St. Landry Parish to divide all his property with his children.  There was a family meeting before Willard S. Cushman, a Notary Public of Bayou Chicot, to sell all his property.  It states that the only relatives in the Parish are his brothers, Elisha and Greene, who are the children's uncles."
