      Obituary:
      Beaumont Journal, March 5, 1931
EASTERN STAR FOUNDER HERE DIES AT AGE 64
Miss Kate Elizabeth Rogers Succumbs at Home on Calder Avenue
Miss Kate Elizabeth Rogers, 64, resident of Beaumont for nearly half a century, and founder of the first Eastern Star chapter organized in Beaumont, died at her home, 815 Calder Avenue, at 1 o'clock Wednesday morning, following an illness of about one week.
      SABINE PASS NATIVE
Miss Rogers was born in Sabine Pass the daughter of Captain and Mrs. W.E. Rogers, who came to this section of the country early in the nineteenth century.
The Rogers family lived in Sabine Pass until the storm of 1886 when household effects and stock were lost, and the family left their home city to establish a home in Beaumont.
Previous to their removal here, however, the Rogers family was active in development of the new Texas.  Captain Rogers, father of the deceased, who died here little more than five years ago, was near Sabine Pass when the famous battle named for the city took place.  Captain Rogers was on a gunboat which had been sent to the rescue of Dick Dowling and his 40 fighting Irishmen, but due to engine trouble the boat was not able to pull into the harbor until the federal forces had been routed.
The Eastern Star chapter organized by Miss Rogers, and of which she was worthy matron bore the name of Oliver chapter.  This, however, was abandoned after a few years, and within a short time the present Eastern Star chapter came to take the place of the abandoned chapter.
      ACTIVE LODGE WORKER
Miss Rogers has always been active in the work of the Eastern Star organization.  However, some years ago she sustained an injury which for a time rendered her unable to pursue her work with the organization.  In May, 1925, she was elected secretary of Beaumont chapter No. 71, a position she held until the time of her death.  During this time she has served under the following worthy matrons:  Mrs. Winnie Davis Green, Mrs. Ella M??? Bertram, Mrs. Jeanette Aber????, Mrs. Kate Mauer, Mrs. Iva Ne???, Mrs. Minnie Pearl Davis.
Miss Rogers was not????  in her elective position ???? home was always open to ??? grand officers who came ????  city.  In her fraternal work she is known throughout this state as well as many others.  Tuesday, the last day of Miss Roger's illness, a school of instruction was being held at the Eastern Star lodge, according to plan and a program formulated by Miss Rogers.  Even ???....???  ...ers in memory of their father.
The deceased was also an active member of the local Red Cross chapter, and was a member of the executive committee of the organization as well as chairman of the production committee.  Her duty in this office was to carry out quotas and other duties assigned by the national committee.  Other than this Miss Rogers also took an active interest and worked untiringly with tubercular children, and was at all times interested in the work for the Jefferson county Tubercular hospital.
      SURVIVORS
Surviving Miss Rogers are two sisters, Mrs. Mena R. Moore of New York City; and Miss Pynk Rogers and the following nieces and nephews, Roger G. Moore of New York; Juanita Moore, of New York; Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Moore of Beaumont; O.W. Keith of Port Arthur; and G.A. Keith of Port Neches.
Funeral arrangements which are being made by the Roberts Undertaking company will be completed upon the arrival of relatives from New York.  The body, however, will be taken to the late residence Wednesday afternoon where it will remain until time for the funeral.
Services will be held at the First Methodist Church, where Miss Rogers has been a member every since she came to Beaumont to make her home.
Active pallbearers will be:  Frederick Warren, George Masterson, J.G. Fuqua, Felix Sanders, Marvin Scurlock, George T. Adams and Earl Harrison.  Another active pallbearer will be chosen upon the arrival of out-of-town relatives.
Honorary pallbearers will be intimate friends of the family.
