C.A. Talley, 78, a retired college professor, passed away Friday, January 20, 2006, of leukemia.
Memorial service: 3:00 p.m., Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Austin. Burial: Private burial at Austin Memorial Park in Austin. Honorary pallbearers: His two sons, Tim and David, his grandson-in-law, David Scobee, grandson, Chris Talley, and son-in-law, Tom Jones.
Claude Alvin Talley was born September 11, 1927, to Claude Alvin Talley, Sr., and Lilian Pope Talley in Wilson County, Stockdale.
His first job was with the Department of Agriculture when he was 16 years old and the youngest employee to be put in charge of a crew of men. He met his wife, Geraldine Fisher, when they were both 11 years old and in middle school. They both were in college when they married, May 31, 1946, at Travis Park Methodist church in San Antonio. They were happily married for almost 60 years. He was a member of the Concordant Class at the First Baptist Church in Austin.
Dr. Talley was a Professor of Economics at Victoria College and the University of Houston in Victoria. He taught for 31 years in college and university. In earlier years, he owned Talley Transfer and Storage Company and the Red Ball Cab Company, both in San Antonio. He was the Systems Economist for Victoria Bankshares, Inc. of Victoria and for fourteen years published a monthly periodical, The Business and Economic Journal. He served professionally as a consulting economist, forensic economist and as an associate member of the American Bar Association. He was a member of the American Economic Association for nearly forty years. He was a past president of Rotary and a member for 34 years, and a Third Degree Freemason. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin; a Masters and Bachelor's from Trinity University of San Antonio.
To his family, he was the philosopher, the consummate devil's advocate to make them aware of what was the better of truths, e.g., it is better to be trusted than to be loved.
His family is forever grateful to those who serve at the Community Hospice for their gracious, comforting actions and thoughts.
Survivors: Wife, Geraldine Talley of Fort Worth; children, Kathleen Ann Tones and husband, Tom, of Victoria. David Lee Talley and wife, Carolyn, of Fort Worth, and Timothy Claude Talley and wife, Robin, of Austin, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
