NORMAN — Retired Lt. Col. (USAF) Carl Everett Cloud, 95, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014, in Oklahoma City. He was born Aug. 18, 1918, in Konawa, to Elbie Jane (Hughes) and Thomas Marion Cloud.
He graduated from Konawa High School. While attending East Central State College in Ada, he was employed as a surveyor by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture. In 1939, he enlisted in the Army. He became a pilot in the Army Air Corp in 1943. During World War II, he was a P-51 fighter pilot with the Eighth Air Force, 339th Fighter Group, flying 69 missions over Germany.
On July 14, 1945, he married Lucille Bates. They were married for 63 years until her death in 2009. In the Fifth Air Force during the Korean War, he was a member of the 49th Fighter Group flying P-51s and later F-80s. He was one of the first pilots to complete 100 missions during that conflict and flew a total of 117 missions.
Returning to the states in 1951, he was a communications officer. He was the commanding officer of the 603rd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron at Langerkopf, Germany, in 1956. Reassigned to the States, he was a member of the Strategic Air Command. His last assignment was with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C. He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters. After retiring from the military, he worked for the Communications and Engineering Company in Oklahoma City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille and their son, Michael Dennis Cloud; his parents; sister, Lora Smith; and brothers John Cloud and Jack Cloud.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Richard Ellis; daughter, Teresa Cloud; and grandson, Jeremy Brooks Cloud.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Konawa Memorial Cemetery in Konawa.
Arrangements for Ret. Lt. Col. Cloud and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman.
