    Notes
    • He also used the name William Marion Dalton.
The stories are that he was a respected farmer and local politician in California before his brothers staged their first train robbery.  But it is doubted he ever served in any political capacity much less serving in the California legislature.  The Ardmore Daily Ardmoreite of June 4, 1894 quotes Jennie as saying he was wealthy when she met him in California and he had served two terms in the Merced County legislature.  Problems with this are (1) he was at home with his parents in Missouri and 17 years old in 1880 and (2) a term in the California legislature is two years and he married Jennie in 1885, meaning he would have had to move from Missouri to California by 1881, when he was 18, and establish himself there well enough to get elected and make a fortune, all within a five year period.
He was killed while running from U.S. marshals who were attempting to arrest him in Elk, I.T.
