    Notes
    • -
Gov. Berkeley, VA, being anxious to encourage settlers for what he called his "southern plantations" for that land located south of the Chowan River, granted 10,000 ac to Rev. Roger Green of Nasemond County in 1653. This land was to be given to the first hundred persons to begin settlement with the Rev. Green to receive 1,00ac for his efforts. The oldest deed of record in NC, dated  3-1-1661 was to George Durant for a tract of land on a river called "Perquimans" from Indian Chief Kilconanen, King of the Yoepim tribes. Other deeds may have been in Nansemond which have been lost from fires.
We know that John Barrow was an inhabitant of this area at the same time as George Durant as he was called upon to give a deposition "to his own knowledge" that George Durant was occupying this land at an early date. This deposition was given on 7-13-1693 in Per quimans Pct, where we know that John Barrow was living at least as early as 1668 when he married Sarah Sutton. When John Barrow gave his deposition in Perquimans in 1693 the document states he is about 50 years of age, thus establishing his birth in 1643.
