      The area where the Cloud family lived was home to cotton plantations. It became Sabine County in 1837, but prior to 1832 it was part of the Municipality of Nacogdoches and then the Municipality of San Augustine from 1832 until 1835 and before becoming a county, it became the Municipality of Sabine.

      A major road known variously as El Camino Real (The Kings' Highway) and The Old San Antonio Road passed from Sabine Parish in Louisiana and crossed the Sabine River into the area known at the time as Sabine, Texas. The Sabine River was an important waterway which later became a dividing line between Louisiana and Texas. The highway crossed the Sabine River at Gaines' Ferry, from Natchitoches, Louisiana on the east passing westward through Sabine to Nacogdoches and on to San Antonio Texas and ending in Mexico City.
