Manatee jury recommends life for murder of 1950s actress

BRADENTON -- Gary Michael Cloud refused to attend court this week, so he wasn't present Thursday when a jury recommended he spend the rest of his life behind bars for murder.
Cloud, 49, was convicted last week in the beating and stabbing death of 1950s actress Barbara Jean Laney, 67, who was killed in her condominium in Bradenton in August 2002.
Prosecutors this week pitched their case for why Cloud, a convicted felon, should get the death penalty for the homicide. But the 12-member jury recommended that Cloud be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Chief Circuit Judge Robert Bennett has the final say, but the jury's recommendation carries weight and it is rare for a judge to sway from it.
A sentencing hearing is expected to be held in the coming weeks.
State prosecutor Art Brown said he thought the case for the death penalty was strong considering Cloud had "terrorized" two other elderly women in their homes in the last decade, according to testimony from police officers.
Also, Cloud was on probation after serving seven years in prison for carjacking when he was arrested in 2002 on the murder charge.
Laney, who acted in the TV series "Sky King," a 1950s Western adventure show, knew Cloud through his mother, Judith Criswell, a friend of Laney's since grade school.
Prosecutors said Cloud killed Laney amid a robbery for drug money, a charge that Cloud's attorney, Fred Mercurio, disputed.
Manatee County sheriff's detectives say DNA testing showed Cloud's blood was at the crime scene at Laney's condominium at Wildewood Springs in West Bradenton.
Several blood spots on the back of Laney's shirt matched Cloud's blood, state prosecutor Bruce Lee said Friday.
At trial, Cloud's defense tried to cast doubt on the state's case. Mercurio argued authorities didn't perform enough tests on other blood spatters, and failed to pursue other suspects.
After 14 hours of deliberations over two days, a jury returned a guilty verdict last Friday against Cloud, who comes from a prominent Manatee County family.
His father owns Cloud Insurance Agency and served as the city of Bradenton's agent, and his grandfather founded the county's oldest pest control service, Gene Cloud & Sons Termite & Pest Control, in 1934.
Mercurio, the defense lawyer, said he was pleased and relieved with the jury's recommendation.
