    Notes
    • Father of Alexius IV and Irene Angelica. Part of the Hohenstaufen House of Germany Isaac II (1185-1195), Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, and leader of the insurgents during the 2nd Crusade, was dethroned by his brother Alexius in 1195.  Alexius became Emperor Alexius III, and captured his brother, Isaac II, at Stagira in Macedonia.  He had Isaac's eyes put out, and kept him prisoner. Isaac's daughter, Irene, was then married to Philip of Swabia, brother of Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI.  The early death of Henry VI led to a great battle between the houses of Europe for supremacy.
Isaac Alexius' son, Alexius IV, appealed for aid against his uncle, and the son was able to free Constantinople and his father in 1203. Both father and son were then set upon the Byzantine throne with the help of the Crusaders.  The son, Alexius IV was killed in 1204. And the Father, Isaac Alexius was again deposed after a six month reign. The Throne was usurped by General Mourzouphles, who had the son killed. General Mourzouphles then proclaimed himself to be Alexius V Ducas. The Crusaders of the 4th Crusade drove him out, he fled to Morea, but was captured, arrested, and executed. Isaac Alexius died, still imprisoned, blind and insane.
