    • The first Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne, Carolus Augustus,  the Great, died age 71 of pleurisy  on January 28 814.  He is succeeded by his son, 36 year old Louis the Pious son of Desiderata.

    • CHARLEMAGNE: Emperor of "the west" and King of France. Said to have had nine wives, including Hameltrude, Desiderata (dvcd); Hildegarde (d. bef. him); Fastrade the Saxon;  Liutgarde the German; Maltegarde; Gersunde, a Saxon; Regina; and  Adalinda.

Emperor of the West Franks 800-814 King of Neustrasia at the death of his father, Pepin the Short in 768. King of Austrasia at the death of his brother, Carloman in 771. King of all the Franks in 771. Married in 771 to Hildegarde of Swabia.  Repudiated this marriage in 774.  Visited Rome, 1st King of Franks to do so. Described as over 6' tall, superb athlete, a merry man  who can not read but speaks both Greek and Latin. 774  Conquered Lombardy, Venetia, Istria, Dalmatia, and Corsica. Fought with, and subjugated the Saxons 772-785. Invaded and destroyed the Kingdom of Lombardy 773-774, and became King of the Lombards in 773. In 778 led an expedition into northeastern Spain, against the Arabs.  His "paladin Roland at Roncesvalle led to the writing of many medieval books and literature of Charlemagne's life, including the epic "Chanson de Roland" (Song of Roland).  Roland was killed in 778. Beginning of the Carlovingian cycle in France. 800  - Was crowned "Carolus Augustus, Emperor of the Romans on Christmas Day 800, by Pope Leo III. Subdued the Avars in 791-796 and 804. Organized and administration of his realm, beginning of the Holy Roman Empire; at the end of his conquests his realm included much of Europe.  Strengthened Christianity through his realm. Founded schools, including Alcuin.  Patron of literature, science, and art. Died 814 at age 72.  Buried at Aix-le-Chappelle town in Rhenish Prussia west and south of Cologne. Died of pleurisy January 28. Succeeded by Louis I named the Pious.
