- John McDowell was a Baldwin-Felts Detective and was present at the Battle of Matewan in 1920 where the detectives were ambushed by miners and townspeople. He escaped death by swimming the Tug River. After the agency broke up in 1936, he went into local law enforcement and was a constable in Raleigh Co, WV when he died of a crushed chest in a car wreck.
