Dickinson, The Honorable A. James When he found that he was facing a terminal illness, he reminded us that as a premature baby weighing less than 2 pounds at birth (a record in 1940 Minnesota) he had already and clearly beaten the odds and that every day since was a gift to be cherished. And cherish life he did. Jim graduated from St. Paul Academy, Union College in Schenectady, NY, and the University of Minnesota Law School. He was a lifelong resident of his beloved St. Paul, where he clerked on the Minnesota Supreme Court, practiced law with Stringer & Rohleder for 31 years, and went on to proudly serve, with distinction, as a Ramsey County District Judge for 11 more years. A true gentleman and a scholar, the law was Jim's passion, second only to his loving family and friends. He was a wise and august lawyer and judge who took his responsibilities with all appropriate seriousness. But on his own time, he shared a wonderfully spirited humor spiced by the outrageously boisterous and totally infectious AJ laugh that will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Jim was an avid golfer, squash player, skier and outdoorsman who loved to travel. His favorite place on earth was with his Alice and family and friends on Madeline Island. His professional and civic interests were many, and included involvement in Minnesota Landmarks, Inc. as both Director and Secretary from 1976-1997, and he was an instructor at the William Mitchell College of Law. Jim was preceded in death by mother and father Edwina and Samuel Gilmore Dickinson. Survived by the love of his life and wife of 43 years, Alice (Hurley) Dickinson; children, Susan, A. James, Jr. (Nancy), Mary MacDonald (Tim), and Charles (Coreil); three grandchildren, Sam, Will and Charlotte; sister, Elizabeth Dickinson; and his dog, Madeline. Funeral service 3 PM, Monday, December 1, 2008, at Olivet Congregational Church (1850 Inglehart Ave, St. Paul). Visitation 4-7 PM, Sunday, November 30, 2008, at O'Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home (575 S. Snelling Ave, St. Paul, 651-698-0796). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul Academy & Summit School or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org).
