      Obituary:
      OFFICER GUNNING DEAD.
He Was a Brave Confederate and a Good Policeman.
At his home on Powhattan street at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Polic
e Officer J.S. Gunning died of pneumonia. Mr. Gunning was a native of T
ennessee. He served in the Confederate army as a private, and was a mem
ber of Camp Sterling Price, of this city. Both as a soldier and citizen
, he bore an untarnished reputation. He had been a member of the Dallas p
olice force for four years and was always held to be a brave and effici
      ent officer.
Officer Gunning was 48 years old. He was at the battle of Franklin when C
leburne and Granbury were slain, and was a captain when the war closed. A
fter the war, for sixteen years, he was either sheriff or chief deputy o
f one of the most lawless counties in the mountains of East Tennessee. J
anuary, 1880, he went to Colorado and passed several years in that stat
e, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. He had been desperately wounded in the b
attles of the Confederacy, and his career was an eventful one. Six year
s ago, he came to Dallas and four years ago, he was placed on the polic
e force. He was a powerful man, 6 feet 5 inches in his stockings, and a w
eek ago, was the picture of health. He was a member of the Police Benev
olent association and the funeral was conducted under its auspices.
Officer Gunning's old comrades of Camp Sterling Price were many of them a
lso present. The pall bearers were a detail from the police department, c
      onsisting of Officer H. W. Waller, W. D. Webb, Robert Cornwell, C. F. D
      urham, O. M. Rawlins and A. Hughes.
Mr. Gunning leaves a widow and a son. The latter is a member of the Dal
      las fire department.
