Frederick Huffman Found Dead In Bed; Well Known Man Died At Home Of His Sister Mrs. John Meredith.
Though his death has been expected at any time during the past three years, the finding of Frederick Huffman a wealthy and well known resident of Jackson township, dead in his bed at the home of his sister, Mrs. John Meredith, this morning was a great shock to the family and relatives.
Mr. Huffman has been in poor health for the past five years, having dropsy in a bad form. This caused heart trouble and other combinations and though every thing possible was done for him, doctors never gave any hopes of his recovery and predicted that he would die suddenly.
He had been in a Ft. Wayne hospital recently taking treatment but for about two weeks he has been staying at the John Meredith home four miles south of the city. He ate supper last evening and appeared better than he had been for weeks. After supper, John Gerwig, a son-in-law of Mr. Meredith's and Benjamin Studbaker, an old friend and neighbor, came and spent the evening and Mr. Huffman conversed freely with them. He retired about ten o'clock and he was alive and sleeping at midnight but when the family arose this morning at 5:30 he was dead and had been for several hours.
Mr. Huffman was born in Clark County, Ohio, and was at the time of his death about seventy years of age. He was the son of Henry Huffman and when four years of age moved with his parents to Indiana and to Jackson township this county, where he lived continuously until nine years ago when he discontinued farming and has lived at times since with his brothers and sisters.
Of his brothers and sisters, Mesdames John Meredith, Isaac Jones, and Jacob Leffler and Joseph Griffith of Warren and Henry George R., Levi and Samuel Huffman survive him as well as two half brothers, Peter, living in Ohio and Jacob Huffman.
Mr. Huffman was married to Mary Ruse and they were the parents of a large family. Of these Ellen, Daniel, Ezekiel and Mrs. Kathryn Irick are dead and Mrs. George Gavin of North Dakota, Mrs. Alva Christman and Albert Huffman survive. Mrs. Huffman died nearly five years ago.
The funeral will be held Friday, the cortege leaving the house at two o'clock. The service will be held at the Christian church at Warren in charge of Rev. Ross. Interment will take place in the Woodlawn cemetery near Warren.
