    • Walter Wiess is somewhat of an enigma to his family.  Robert Wiess, grandson, wrote April, 2004 that his aunt Gladys Wiess Conley said Walter was the son of Joseph Wiess and Catherine Coffee.

His death certificate says he is the son of Christopher Wiess of Texas.  Others believe him to be the son of Napoleon Bonaparte Wiess and Cynthia Sorrelle.  But Napoleon died in 1872 and Walter's various statements of his birthdate being 1874, 1875 and then 1891, make it impossible for him to be the son of Napoleon.  Napoleon died in March of 1872.  If Walter was the son of Napoleon and if he was truly born on the 24th of December, then he would have had to have been born in 1870 or 1872 (after Napoleon's death).  He could not have been born in 1871, as Napoleon Bonaparte Wiess II was born in October of that year.  (Another puzzling input -- Robert Wiess wrote in May 2004 that he'd been told that Walter left home because his father was mean to him, but Napoleon died before he was born and Cynthia never remarried).  The question still remains -- if he is not the son of Napoleon, why would the widowed Cynthia Wiess take him in when there were other family members living there at Wiess' Bluff better able to care for him?)
In the 1880 census, he is shown living in the household of Cynthia Wiess, a widow now, with her children William (17) and Margaret (11) and Walter, 5.  That census was enumerated June 15, 1880.  Assuming his age of 5 is correct on that census, he was born between June 16, 1874 and June 15, 1875.  Napoleon died in March 1872.  If Cynthia had gotten pregnant just prior to that, she could have had a child in December of 1873, but not in 1875.  Was Walter adopted?

Walter is consistent in giving December 24 as the month and day of his birth, but the year he gives changes from one occasion to another.  He gave his date of birth as December 1875 to the 1900 Hardin county Texas census-taker.

His WW-I registration card records him as giving his dob as 1874 and 43 years old.  The 1920 Jasper county Texas census shows him to be 45 yrs. old (b. 1874) and a log camp foreman.  On the 1930 census he gives his age as 52 (b. 1878).  In 1936 he applied for a social security card and gave his birthdate as 1891, alleging that he was 44 years old.  (Was he trying to avoid forced retirement, or had he lied about his age to Gulf Oil Co. in order to obtain and keep a job?).  His daughter, Mattie Wiess Burton, told her nephew Robert Wiess in July of 2004 that her father was much older when he applied for the job with Gulf Oil and they were looking for younger men.  She said that Walter's nephew got him that job and that he worked for them 28-1/2 years.
He is rumored to have first married a Hooks girl and was disowned by his family for doing so.  Another version is that he was disowned for marrying Johnnie Moffitt while still married to the first woman.  (See census records -- he married Winifred Spikes when he was 28 or 31, depending on what his birth date was, and they had Bessie Bell Wiess as their daughter.  He could have been married prior to that.)
On his Registration Card for WW-I, the printed number at the top left reads "2035" and written at the top right is "2244".  Walter Wiess, Gen. Delivery, Pt. Arthur, Jeff. Tex; Age 43; born Dec 24 1874; occupation Stationary Engineer; employer Texas Co.
He was working for Gulf Oil Co. when he applied for his social security card.  He worked for Gulf Oil Co. as a switcher.
He was very private and never told his family anything about his family -- not even when he was born.  Family lore says when he was buried, his son Eddie guessed at his birth date and put 1874 for his stone.
MORE EARLY SOUTHEAST TEXAS FAMILYS by Madiline Martin says Walter Wiess was married to a lady named Maude.

    Notes
    • Napoleon apparently died without a will and all fiscal and probate papers relating to the Wiess brothers "were removed at some time in the past and were never returned".  His wife and children got nothing from his death, the description and disposition of his property, if any, is unknown.  One of the riverboats he owned, the "James L. Graham", was in service for several years after that until it blew near Redfish Reef in Galveston bay in May of 1876.  In a lawsuit filed by Cynthia A. Wiess, et al against Margaret Sturrock Wiess, she alleged that 160 acres taken over by Margaret were Napoleon's and hers as his widow.
