    Notes
    • Cornelius Brown left Pennsylvania and purchased 350 acres of land from John Harrison, Jr. in the Neck Creek area along the New River, near present day Belspring, Virginia in 1750 [Augusta County, Virginia, Clerk of Court, Deed Book 3, pages 81, 82]. It does not appear that he ever lived on the land. It eventually became the property of his brother Abraham's sons, Cornelius, Henry and Michael. Cornelius Brown was a tailor. By 1766 he had settled in Congree, South Carolina, where he spent the remainder of his life.
On 24 November 1766, Cornelius Brown of Congree, South Carolina executed a Power of Attorney for his brother Abraham to sell half of the land to William Davis of Philadelphia. The other half went to Abraham. Davis traded in skins and hides and set up shipping and trading centers along the New River.
Abraham Brown wasn't to take title to the land until he paid for it. By February 1, 1786 there was still a balance due. By 1795 Abraham Brown, William Davis and Katherine Davis were deceased. The executor for the Davis's sold the 175 acres sold to William Davis by Cornelius Brown to the executors of Abraham Brown. The whole 350 acres originally bought by Cornelius Brown was now back in the hands of the Brown family. The title to the land was transferred from the executors of Cornelius Brown to the executors of Abraham Brown in 1795.
Cornelius Brown made several land transaction as shown in South Carolina deeds.
In the 1790 Census for South Carolina, Abbeville County, 96 District shows Cornelius Brown with 1 male under 16 years, 1 male over 16 years and 16 slaves.
Cornelius died about 1793. His will was dated 31 October 1792 in Abbeville County, South Carolina. He then wrote a codicil to the will on 1 April 1793 providing for his second wife, Sarah. His will was proved in Abbeville, South Carolina with the estate sale taking place on 3 April 1794 [Beth Sauceman, LaFayette, Georgia; Betty Brown, Moody, Texas.].
