    Notes
    • Abraham (2nd?) and his wife Margaret and their children all moved from the Wood's Creek area to new lands on the west bank of the New River in about 1773. They had been under constant Indian harassment and they had a large and growing family, each of the children wanting better land and opportunity for themselves. Abraham's uncle, Cornelius Brown had earlier received the first grant of land west of the New River (Woods River then) and Abraham and his sons bought and added to this over the years, such that collectively they owned as much as perhaps 2400 acres which extended from about the "Horseshoe Bend" near Belspring today, and down the New River (Northwards) to the Giles County line. Abraham died there in 1784 or 1785, and Margaret died there in 1803. Their first home was probably a log cabin located just above their spring, some 200 or 300 yards downhill from todays route 600, and across from the Brown cemetery. The ruins of the old brick Michael Brown house are to the right and somewhat downhill from the original log and wooden house and spring, below a railroad track put in a century later, to a coal mine in the mountain that was Henry Brown's inheritance from his father, adjacent to the Giles County line, the lands still owned by Stella Brown and the heirs of Willard Kirkwood Brown. Judge Irvin Brown told me of his trips into this mine as a young boy, "some 90 years ago", when I visited him many years ago. (GT Brown)
