    • Obituary:
Nelda Margaret Richardson, 84, of Pleasanton, Texas went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ at 3:09 a.m. on February 29, 2004. She was surrounded by all of her children who loved her so dearly. Margaret was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, and loving Christian. Margaret Richardson was born on a very cold day on January 14, 1920. It was sleeting hard and the roads were so icy that Dr. C.C. Shotts had to leave his Model-T car and walk to the house for the blessed event. She was one of six children born to Kathryn Lucinda and James William Smelley. She attended school at Huff Avenue Ward School in San Antonio through 5th grade, and then went to Poteet until her junior year. She graduated from Charlotte High School. She was also a graduate of San Antonio Business College. Margaret worked at Hurple-Gillespie Ford until she married. She then was the bookkeeper for the Smelley Construction Co., a company founded by her father and later owned and operated by her husband and brother. Margaret married “the love of her life,” Robert Franklin “Bob” Richardson, on August 1, 1941. Bob and Margaret celebrated their 60th anniversary before his passing on Sept. 29, 2001. Margaret and Bob were both charter members of Trinity Baptist Church in Pleasanton. Margaret played the piano for the primary classes and was her class secretary for many years. She left a rich heritage of Christian service, steadfast devotion to country and enduring love for family and friends. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by three children: Nelda Kathryn “Kay” Bean and husband Don; Bobbie Lou Sutton and husband Jim; and James Robert Richardson and wife Janet, all of Pleasanton; a brother, Wayne Smelley and wife Bobbie of Pleasanton; five grandchildren: Bob Medlin and wife Jo of San Antonio; Scott Medlin, Austin; Jamie Sutton and wife Shannon of San Antonio; Katie Adams; and Jordan Richardson, both of Pleasanton; and two great-grandchildren, Jake Adams and Ireland Adams of Pleasanton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers - Harold Smelley, Kenneth Smelley and David Smelley; and one sister, Kathryn Blair. Visitation was held March 1 from 4:30-8 p.m. and services were held Tuesday, March 2, at 10 a.m. in the chapel at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton with Rev. Charles Woodward of Trinity Baptist Church officiating and assisted by Dr. Raymond Martin and Rev. Bill Fowler at the graveside service. Singers were Wayne and Annette Smelley, Janet Richardson and Leigh Anderson, and Dr. Jim Sutton. Margaret was laid to rest in the family plot at the Rutledge Cemetery beside her husband of 60 years. Arrangements by Hurley Funeral Home of Pleasanton.
