Here are parts of Aunt Effie Hornbeak's letters, she lived in Springfield. Mo. Sept. 16, 1979.
She was telling stories of her father William Burrell Mills.
I was just 14 when my father died and I did not know much about his background. What I could remember my father telling of his dad 'James Matthew' taking him to see the Wilson Creek battle ground here in Springfield and his father being killed by Bushwackers and taking his clothes and his horse, and that he had brothers Henry, Jeff, and John and sister Betty. Their mother was a Cloud and from all I can hear is, she was a 'hell cat'. I can just barely remember her, she didn't like my brother, Jeff and she whipped him until it drew blood and father talked pretty hard to her and she left the next day. She died soon after that. I was real small and she gave me and Jessie, my sister a quilt but not Jeff.
Father's first wife died with T.B. and she had a child and it died also. I think my grandfather was killed in Christian Co., but not sure, it could have been south of there. Of all John's children, your mother and I played together when father and mother went to Okla. when I was 8. I don't remember much only Jennie was sick in bed, she had a daughter and Gladys and I didn't like her.
(The Jennie she mentioned was John Madison's sister Jennie and not Jennie Farrow).
Another letter dated Friday, Oct 26th.
I remember mother telling about the age of father, sometime after they had lived in Sparta. The Woodmen Lodge was organized and they ask father, why a young man like him should never be telling his age and father didn't say anything. When he died the Barber knew father was older for mother said he made everything out and didn't ask her, for he knew she needed the money and was he was 10 years older, but he did look much younger. And his mothers name was Comfort.
I didn't know that John had a boy named after father. All I remember is Jennie, Richard, Bea and your mother.
All my love, Effie
