    • A story in the Hashaw family was that Emily said, late in life, that her father was Byrd Whittington, but Byrd married Sarah Guynes in 1826 and Emily was born in 1824.  Other stories about Emily's ancestry are that she was the "love child" of Nito Waoka, a Choctaw signer of the "Dancing Rabbit Creek" treaty, 1830 Mississippi,; or that Waoko gave Emily to the Whittingtons for adoption before his 1830 exile; or that Waoko traded Emily to Harmon Guynes for a bag of corn at age 14.
