Notes |
- His mother and dad moved to Texas about 1851 and settled in Washington County. It's believed they moved to Milam County about 1858 or 1859, settling in Millertown. He apparently met and married Elizabeth Rutherford in Milam county and fathered Jasper, Tom and Jake there. (No one remembers a child named Nancy.) His niece, Jodia Ferguson, in copying from her mother's Bible (his older sister, Becky), copied his middle name as "Lafaet".
The 1870 Census shows him in Milam county, Texas and 17 years old (implying dob ca 1853-4). The 1880 census lists his occupation as farmer and his age as 28, implying the same date of birth -- yet his tombstone shows his dob as 1849. His granddaughter, Hazel Cloud, wrote that he "eloped with Margaret" to Center, I.T. He left his wife, Nancy Rutherford, in Texas, probably around 1882, and moved to Center, I.T. Hazel said Grandpa Bill left his first wife, Nancy Elizabeth, and married Margaret in Texas, and the 1900 census shows that his first child with Margaret was born in Texas in 1880 but his next child, John, was born in 1885 in Indian Territory. After he moved to Oklahoma, Nancy married a man named Wilson. Apparently none of the kids liked Wilson, so they all moved to Oklahoma to be with their dad. He took Her and her youngest child, Jake, to Florida. Mr. Wilson died with no children by Nancy. She was known as "Grandma Wilson" and Margaret was called "Grandma Cloud".
Carl Cloud said in October of 1998 he'd heard there had been a knife fight and one man was killed, that Bill was the only witness to the fight, and that he was advised to leave and go to Oklahoma before the trial.
The Oklahoma land rushes were taking place in the 1890 to 1895 time frame. Perhaps he participated in one of these? He owned a gin in Center, I.T. and some property (houses and lots). (9-11-1997) Aunt Hazel Cloud Brown said he was a cotton gin man and that Jake worked for him as did Lizzie Seybold. Carl Cloud said that Jasper worked in the store and that his dad, Thomas M., and Jake worked in the cotton gin. He said that the gin burnt down one day while they were working there. Carl said that Bill also had a gristmill and a sawmill.
He subsequently moved to Konawa and then to Sasakwa, Oklahoma where he farmed -- raising cotton and tobacco. Hazel said he lived in Center through about 1908 and was living in Konawa about 1910.
A Warranty Deed in Milam County records, vol 103 p 110, executed May 31st, 1910 and recorded June 14, 1911, deeding land in Milam county from W.L. Cloud and M.S. Cloud, husband and wife, to J.C. Johnson, containing 196 acres of land. "Also our entire interest in, and to all of the estate of W.J. Cloud deceased (father of W.L. Cloud, grantor herein) situated in Milam County, Texas except a tract of land which been sold to R.S. Cloud described in deed dated January 13th 1896 filed for record Dec. 14th 1907."
Aunts Hazel and Shorty said his cousin, Jim, killed a man at Center, I.T. and grandpa Bill gave him $3.00 and told him to leave. Jim moved close to Muskogee (in the Kiamichi hills) and changed his name to Black.
Ruby Spaulding Varner said he raised 14 orphans in addition to his six children and that aunt Elba and Aunt Lizzie were two of those. This could explain how the children of J.R. and Amanda Seybold were cared for when they died (Zeb, Lena and Lizzie). (Could his second wife, Margaret, have been one of the orphans he took in?) Ruby also said he was worth 1 million dollars at one time but was $200 in debt when he died.
