    Notes
    • Dardenelle said that he'd heard that Margaret was working in Bill and Nancy's home and became pregnant, so Nancy left him.  Hazel says they "eloped" to Indian Territory.  Shorty said she was 12 years old when she got pregnant and that her last name was either Greenback or Skipper.  (Another researcher wrote that her maiden name was Carter or MacCarter.)  A Warranty Deed filed both in Seminole County, OK and in Milam County, TX, May 31st 1910, is signed "W.L. Cloud and wife, M.S. Cloud", which would imply her name was Skipper (assuming Shorty remembered her name correctly).
The 1907 Oklahoma statehood census has her age as 44 years, implying a dob of 1863. If their first child, Mary, was born 1882, she was 18 or 19 when she conceived their first child.
(8-26-1997) Aunt Hazel said "Grandma Cloud" died one year after Grandpa Bill died.  She said that they "married" in Texas and moved to Oklahoma -- but no records have been found of grandpa legally divorcing Nancy or for any marriage to Margaret.  Did he ever marry Margaret?

Some speculate Margaret (McCarty) Bilderback on the 1880 census is the second wife of William Lafayette Cloud. The McCarty family is 5 households away (probably a mile or more) from the family of William L. Cloud and first wife Nancy Rutherford Cloud (they are HH 241). If it is her, she was very pregnant at the time of the enumeration and would give birth the next month.

Was the child she bore the child of William Cloud or Green Bilderback? It's hard to imagine her being 8 or 9 months pregnant with the child of another man while living with her husband in the house of her in-laws, indicating this was Green's child ? or at least he thought it was.

Cloud family oral lore states William's second wife Margaret had been working in his home as a servant and he got her pregnant there (we know he had people from the surrounding area work in his home and in his several businesses). As with much of the "lore", perhaps only part of that is true ? perhaps she did work for William but her child was Green's and she kept her child when she married William ? or perhaps it is all true.

It appears the Margaret on the 1880 census lived close enough to have walked to William's home and worked there, but did she? Her occupation is listed as "house keeper" whereas most women on that census are listed as "keeping house". Examination of the census would indicate several of the younger women were "house keepers" by occupation, lending further evidence she might have been working for William Cloud.

It looks like Green Bilderback remarried and the records following represent his new wife, Nancy Ann Frady, who just happens to have been born the same year (1863) and place (Texas) as Margaret.

This researcher thinks Margaret and Nancy are two different people, lending credence to the speculation that Margaret McCarty Bilderback became William Cloud's second wife. It does not represent solid proof, nor does it answer the question as to which man was the father of her first child Mary.

The (unverified by this researcher) evidence that some descendants of the McCarty family have autosomal DNA matches with people having Cloud family ties, increases the possibility that Margaret McCarty Bilderback became William Cloud's second wife and bore him at least two children (the second two, who were John and Alice Cloud) and perhaps the first, Mary Cloud, was his also. A mitochondrial DNA test for a matrilineal descendant of both Mary and Alice would help determine whether both women had the same mother.

The oldest child is Eula Viola Oakley and her death certificate shows her parents as Ephram Bilderback and Nancy Ann Frady. The death cert. of Mary E. above is for Mary Ella Shelly and her parents are listed as Ephraim G. Bilderback and Nancy Ann Frady. The informant was her daughter Mrs. Josephine Shelly.
