    Notes
    • Baptist Minister. Grew up in Alabama. Joined the CSA on May 18, 1863, being attached to Company K, 50th Alabama Regiment, Day's Brigade. After the war, in  1866, he and his  family moved to Texas, first Grayson Co., and then to Wise  Co., and finally to Brown Co., where  he died. There exists a letter written by William Martin Gaines' daughter Irene to a nephew, Randolph Gaines, on July 4, 1928. Irene, who was called Rena provided the following:
"Grandfather Gaines, Henry Pendleton Gaines, son of Thomas and Susannah  Strother Gaines moved from North Carolina to Greene County, Alabama in 1818 on the Bigbee  River. Father was born in 1826, Jan 15. Grandfather sold out, moved to North Middle  Alabama, Walker Co. There my father was raised, he was a farmer. Grandfather raised him to be a good worker, honest, truthful, he didn't drink whiskey nor swear, had no bad habits, he was converted to the love of God in 1844. He was married Sept. 20, 1848. When the war broke out, he volunteered in 1863. Left mother and children the 18 May 1863 and joined Bragg's Army near Shelbyville, Tennessee, the last of May. He was in Day's Brigade, 50 Alabama, Co.K. Was in all the battles that were fought from Chicamonga to Bentonville, North  Carolina. He surrendered at Green Burrow, North Carolina in May 1865. He was in the Infantry and walked home, he left Green Burrow on the 3rd of May 1865 and got home the night of 26 May 1865, on the road 23 days. In the fall of 1866 he moved with his  family to Grayson Co., Texas. The night papa came home, old uncle Allen, one of the negroes, met him, he told mother. She has told me several times about it. He said Miss Moffie, mas William is coming home  Friday night. She said  how do you know Allen, he said something told him he w as, so mother said  he fired his pine torches way he went and come in with papa. I sure remember that night. ma woke us up but Johnnie didn't know him, he was afraid of him and cried, but I remembered and got in his lap, put my arm around his neck. No one only those that have had the experience of a war no how bad they are. May the lord forbid another one will ever be.
